CharmHealth EHR - Dispense Units Upgrade

Dispense Units Upgrade by Surescripts in eRx Flow

From September 1st, 2021, Surescripts will be upgrading to the latest specifications for Quantity Unit Of Measure as 'Dispense Unit' on ePrescribing drugs. These changes are based on NCPDP (National Council for Prescription Drug Programs) terminology codes recommendation. The recent version of the codes contains a smaller subset of Quantity-Unit-Of-Measure (Dispense Unit) codes to improve the quality of Scripts.
eRx Dispense Units

Currently, we have 86 units allowed as part of the 'Dispense Unit'. NCPDP recommendation allows only 28 dispense units. The remaining units will be marked as sunset codes on Sep 1st, 2021. Prescriptions having sunset codes will not be allowed to be ePrescribed from Sep 1st, 2021 from CharmHealth EHR. This includes the Prescriptions having sunset codes, in:

  • Past Rx
  • Templates
  • Refill Requests and RxChange requests
  • Compounded drugs having ingredients with sunset codes

Impact of NCPDP recommendation in CharmHealth EHR Rx Flow:

From Aug 9th, only the new subset of Dispense Units will be available in the 'Dispense Units' drop-down at the prescription adding points while adding new Rx.

Older prescriptions having sunset codes will be allowed to be ePrescribed from the 'Past Rx' and 'Templates' sections until Aug 25th, 2021. From Aug 26th, 2021 such older prescriptions having sunset codes and compounded drugs having ingredients with sunset codes will not be allowed to ePrescribe from CharmHealth EHR. Such old prescriptions need to be added/updated with new dispense units into the system to make them be ePrescribed.

Actions to be taken by the users on older prescriptions having sunset codes:

For Template Drugs:

  • Go to 'Settings > Templates'
  • Open the associated Prescription templates
  • Edit the dispense unit for the needed prescriptions and save the templates

For Compounded Drugs:

  • Go to 'Settings > Rx > Manage Supplements & Drugs > Drugs'
  • Edit the corresponding Custom Drug
  • Update the 'Quantity Unit' field for the associated ingredients.

Refill Requests received from Pharmacy: (from Sep 1st, 2021):

  • Refill Requests having a sunset code can be approved using the 'Replace' option.
  • In Replace flow, you can select the allowed dispense unit.

Rx Change requests received from Pharmacy: (from Sep 1st, 2021)

  • Only the denial option is allowed for such prescriptions having sunset codes and initiate a new Rx

Past Rx:

  • Older prescriptions having sunset codes are not allowed to be repeated
  • A new prescription needs to be written with an allowed dispense unit by choosing the drug.
