Driving License Reader

The Extract Patient Data from Driving License feature helps in extracting the patient demographics from Driving License in the new/add patient registration workflow. Practices can enable the feature to auto-extract Patient data from the barcode available on the backside of the driving licenses.

The feature detects data available on barcodes and converts it into readable text. Practices can capture all vital data, minimize data entry errors, and save manual effort and time.

Enable Driving License Reader

The Practice Admin/Office Manager can enable the Driving License Reader feature for their Practice Account using the following steps:

1. Go to Settings > Patients > Patient Registration tab
   
2. Enable the 'Extract Patient Demographics from Driving License Barcode' option.
3. Click on the 'Save' button
   

Auto-Extract Data from Driving License Barcode

Once configured, the option for auto-extracting data from the driving license barcode appears on the Patient Registration page. Members can access the feature using the steps below:

1. Click on the 'Extract Data from Driving License' link.
2. Patient data can be extracted from the Driving License barcode either by uploading the image copies or scanning using the scanner device connected to your computer or laptop.
   
   1. Uploading Driving License - Click on the 'Upload Front Side of Driving License' and upload the license from your local drive.
      Note: The feature supports only images in JPEG or PNG format.
      
      Since the feature extracts data from the barcode, you can skip adding the front side, but it is mandatory to upload or scan the backside image of the driving license containing the barcode.
      
      Ensure the barcode is available on the backside of the Patient's driving license before uploading, as shown below.
      
   2. Scanning Driving License - Click on the 'Scan Front Side of Driving License' to scan. More details on the prerequisites and scanning driving license are available here.
3. Once the feature detects a valid barcode (either by upload or scanning process), it auto-extracts and fills in the respective Patient data on CharmHealth EHR.
   
4. Verify the extracted data and fill in the remaining details manually.
5. Click on the 'Add' button.

Scanning Driving License

Prerequisites for Scanning

For scanning a patient's driving license, ensure you have a TWAIN-compatible scanner. You can check your scanner specification to find whether it is TWAIN-compatible or contact your vendor.

You need to install a scanner plugin compatible with your operating system and browser. If you don't have one, a dialogue box requesting you to download the plugin pops up as soon you try to scan.

Scan Workflow

1. Click on the 'Scan Front Side of Driving License' to scan.
2. Use the scanner device connected with your system to scan the front side of the driving license, and click on the 'Scan' button.
   
   Note: You may have to install the scanner plugin mentioned under prerequisites at this stage.
3. After scanning, click the 'Upload' button to submit the scanned image.
4. Click on the 'OK' button on the prompt requesting you to scan the backside of the driving license.
   
   
5. Click on the 'Submit' button.
6. Once a valid barcode is detected, you can view and verify the auto-extracted data and manually fill in the remaining details in the 'Add Patient' view.
